need | want matters of priority

Spokane, Washington - June 28, 2011 -- Love, fame, wealth, one's next meal.

The Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture and Terrain are proud to announce NEED | WANT, a new juried art exhibition for Fall 2011 concerned with the way contemporary American society assigns value and priority.

What do we need as people? What do we need as a society? What do we merely want? Is there any difference? How do these priorities shift over time? How do they become distorted?

We're looking for artists of all ages and disciplines, working in any media, to submit work concerned with these issues for consideration in an exhibition that will run from Oct. 14, 2011 through January 7 at the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture in Spokane, Washington

NEED | WANT is a collaboration between the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture and Terrain, a grassroots, non-profit organization seeking to connect generations of artists with each other and to promote the arts in the community at large.

Submissions are being taken now, online at www.terrainspokane.com. Submissions are due to the website by July 29 at midnight. The jury will convene and artists will by notified by August 5th. We will only be jurying submitted art, so please only present pieces that are available for the event.

The jury will consist of MAC staff, Terrain organizers and representatives of the Spokane Arts Commission.

NEED | WANT will open at the MAC on Friday, October 14. Our opening party will be that night between 6-9pm. The exhibit runs through January 7, 2012

This event is going to be a vital, timeless inquiry into our shared values. Join us.

ABOUT TERRAIN: Terrain was conceived in 2008 by a group of young organizers obsessed with helping their peers get noticed by the art establishment. Their idea was to host a juried exhibition with the atmosphere of a pop concert, with the intent of giving all ages of people, regardless of taste in art or music, an excuse to come together, make contact and facilitate art that stretches across traditional boundaries. In its three years of existence, Terrain has exposed over 9000 arts patrons to over 120 emerging artists and 200 pieces of art.

ABOUT THE NORTHWEST MUSEUM OF ARTS & CULTURE: Popularly known as the MAC, this museum is one of the Inland Northwest's oldest cultural organizations. (Founded in 1916 as the Eastern WA State Historical Society). The MAC's mission is to actively engage all people in the appreciation of arts and culture through collections stewardship as well as exhibits and programs of art, history, and American Indian culture.  The MAC strives to be the preeminent cultural showplace for exhibits that educate and entertain. The MAC believes museums should be a natural gathering place for members of its community.
